Disaster Snapshot


A major earthquake happened on October 8, 2005 (at 8:50am local time), the magnitude of 7.6 located 90 km (55 miles) NNE of ISLAMABAD, Pakistan. This area has been traditionally venerable in past, Indian subcontinent is moving to the north at the speed of 1.6 inch per year colliding with Asia continent causing ground shaking and has produced world's huge rang of mountain in this region. The recent ground shaking near the town of Muzaffarabad, about 10 km southwest of the earthquake epicenter, active thrust faults. Though the major earthquake has already happened but ground fault is producing land sliding and this could lead to more land sliding, which is potential danger in itself especially in case of after-shakes.

Toll and Damage:

The death toll from the major earthquake soars above 42,000 as the first trickle of humanitarian aid begins to flow into the region. It's estimated the death toll will reach "80,000, maybe more." nearly 2.5 million people are believed to be homeless.
